10:41 am - Dresses and Italians
Today I'm back in the grad room hoping to start my next thesis chapter. The pressure is building. I have just finished a piece for a Visualising Equality Booklet the equality project in Sociology are producing. My piece is entitled 'Imagine' and is essentially a word picture of how i would like an equal world to be Read more... ) if you are interested!

Friday I went out for dinner with Chris to Cafe Rossi - a new Italian in Ballynahinch. Not bad but even better considering the town is full of take aways rather than restaurants which makes it even more exciting! The craic was good and we didn't even drink as we were both driving yet by the end we were in hysterics. I can't even remember why. One of those moods I think.

Rest of weekend was pretty quiet. Went window shopping on Sunday. Bought a plum dress in Debenhams reduced from £55 to £38.50 which I was pretty impressed with - Its by Ghrani Stok (sp!!!) with a halterneck. Now I just need an occasion to wear it! Or someone to dress up for ;)

Hmmm....... Sound familiar??

bronagh is nervous.
Shakey, shakey. Parkinson's patients keep inviting you to join their community and you don't know why. I'll tell you why: you're too damn high strung for your own good. Chill out, yo.

03:04 pm - Its a wonderful life(!)
yes, its been a while since I have updated but everything has been so messed up and work has been really busy so I haven't had the time to update properly.

Found out last week that I will have to move faculty (to medicine and health sciences) if I want to keep supervisor. She has a new job in the faculty who are setting up some kind of research centre. Well I was really upset as I have finally settled in here and made good friends and I like working in the grad room. The grad room is a comfortable and 'safe' environment and Im used to it and feel happy working here.

But I know keeping my supervisor is worth so much more for my Phd research plus it may have benefits career wise and in the long run. Will prob just take me a while to get my head round it. Eithne (supervisor) is going in April and I wont be going till Sept so plenty of time I guess.

Also, my aunt who has been really ill for the last 10 months with a brain tumour, keeps going downhill and it doesnt look like she will last for much longer. We are expecting the news anytime in the next couple of weeks if not sooner. Its so hard to watch and deal with and is really upsetting :( Im dreading it when it happens although I know she wont be in pain anymore.

Other news - went to movies last week in QFT with Romana and her friend and saw 'A very long engagement'. I really enjoyed it cos it was on subtitles (hurrah!) and QFT *finally* have (albeit a good one!) loop system in place. Hoping we go to QFT more often. Although certainly *NOT* to see Breakfast at Tiffany's on Valentines day!!

Played (kind of...) squash yesterday, but could feel the cold working on me so my stamina didn't last too long! Had crap nights sleep with a temp and cant stop sneezing. Came in today as wanted to finish off coding an interview from yesterday, plus damn architects are coming round to our place again, to 'Rufus Villas'. Yes I live in Rufus Villas apparently - the landlord named the flats after his dog and now we have a plaque at the top of the flats saying 'RUFUS'..... THe only person who ever calls it Rufus is the landlord himself. TO the rest of us students its good plain ol' Dunluce Av.

Given up work for the day and gonna go get some wrapping paper for a pressie, drag myself home somehow (no Im not a drama queen ;) ) and collapse in front of the telly...maybe a few cartoons.

The grad room is a hotbed of germs so stay away.

This is such a moany entry. *sighs* who cares.

Oh yeah - for those of you who saw the pics on Tam's lj - Ivo is MINE! Well he would be if he was single and fancied me, but I can pretend :)

02:10 pm - Enrique Iglesias
No, I haven't met him or married him. Just went for drinks with his doppleganger albeit with glasses (and not the sunglasses when its dark inside and outside variety)

After Martina's presentation yesterday, (in which she did really well) we decided to go to Dukes for a drink. The only ones who could go (as usual..) were myself, Tam, Martina and Xavier. Xavier is a Spanish overseas Phd Student who is here till May (started last Sept/Oct I think). Well, he was really nice and bought me a drink. Tam and Martina had to leave so I stayed on and bought him a drink in return (go me!) as thought it would look kinda bad if we all went at the same time (I did, honest!) We chatted, and surprisingly were able to understand each other given that accents are hard for me to lipread and english isn't his first language :P

I didn't really get everything he was saying, but that was more to do with the fact that I was drooling slightly. Yes he does look quite like Enrique, but nicer. It was a nice wee evening and I went home with a smile with a *little* restored faith in men.

*sighs*

01:31 pm - Research Conference
Today I found out about a research conference being held in Norway in April by the 'Nordic Network on Disability Research' The deadline is 1st Feb!!! Yes, I know!

I thought I would submit an abstract anyway, not that Im expecting it to be chosen, but hey, its worth a try. Have spent all morning doing an abstract which has to be 200 words and include method of data collection, background and initial findings. THink I have got it finished. Have included it here )

if anyone is interested or bored (delete as applicable....)

Interview this morning was cancelled by same person who cancelled a couple of weeks ago, but she does have a good reason. Irritating none the less as time is moving on.

Gonna get me some nosh and caffeine!

You scored as Remus Lupin. Your alter ego is Remus Lupin. You are a wise and caring wizard and a good, loyal friend to boot. However sometimes in an effort to be liked by others you can let things slide by which ordinairly you would protest about.

03:25 pm - Stress!
Did the 18th interview today which surprisingly went ok. The interviewee was quite open despite a relatively high status and scary facade! First interview of the year and it felt like I was starting over again.

Feeling a bit better than yesterday. Yesterday was an awful day - I felt so down and depressed and everything felt overwhelming. i hate those days. I was close to cancelling my interviews for today and tmw as didn't know how I was going to do them. THankfully I managed to get some sleep and didn't feel so hopeless today. Fantastic start to the year.

Got rid of some pent up frustration/anger (about nothing in particular!) at squash yesterday which was fun apart from Tam nearly swiping my nose off a few times so BE WARNED MIRIAM - check your nose is still there when you finish - safety helmet/nose cover may be desirable....

Home last night, read a bit of ' The full cupboard of life' by Alexander McCall Smith, watched telly and off for an early night (did everyone see the cool snow?!) More chilling tonight.

I need a holiday...only 49 weeks to christmas.....

10:55 pm - IM BAAAAACK!!
Hey everyone. Bro is back. No I haven't fallen off the face of the earth - I've just been in a whole other orbit...well the country which may as well be. My break has included getting back to basics and no computers, a lack of public transport, roaring fires and a lack of civilisation in these parts.... all one hour away from the city lights.

Had a nice Christmas and new year with the usual food and choccies and laziness which was good. Was so good not to do any work for a while - the lack of pressure and weight off my shoulders was much needed. Spent the hols watching dvds, reading, listening to music (yes I can hear music -- although its also the reason I have such cheesy taste ;)) Went shopping in the sales and spent my christmas dosh on the following:

Breakfast at Tiffanys dvd - £6.99
Greatest hits of John Lennon - £6.99
2 dressy/work/interviews/funeral those sorts of occasions jackets from Oasis - fitted at £25 EACH!!!!! Yes you read that - both reduced from £70 each!! Mucho pleased with that.
Knee length black suede boots from River Island reduced from £60 to £29.99!
2 pairs of kitten heels - one black, one red from dorothy perkins in their 'buy one, get one free' offer which cost me £12 in total (they were reduced from £22 each)

and erm...that was it really......

Spent new year with Tam and Donna having pizza and playing games and I'm sure most of you have already seen the cringe worthy pics on Tam's Lj (damn u!!)

Apologies to some people -
Miriam - really sorry did'nt make Valid pop - hope it was good fun;
Lou - wasn't able to make your party - hope you had a great birthday, and
Vicky - sorry about NYE - already had plans which fell through at the last moment- hope it was good!

No new year resolutions - I have given up on them. Just to try and deal with stuff better, to sort myself out this year (really HAVE to get somewhere this year). Hoping this year will be better than 2004 which was so shitty. Also to tell my friends I appreciate them and to try and stand up for myself and be stronger rather than an emotional wreck!
so yeah. Also more squash this year starting next week!

Really have to try and stay calm and not crack up under pressure. Really have to get this thesis and interviews done calmly and in one piece and not think the whole world is coming to an end and that I can't cope anymore. Just wish I didn't feel so fragile all the time.
Hey, I started off so well in this entry and am rapidly going downhill to depressionland now!! ON that note!
I think this must be my longest entry EVER! (well since I started a couple of months ago.

ANother new year resolution (did i say somewhere I wasn't going to make any....?) is to try and talk to people more and not come across as quiet or something when I can't understand what is going on or what people are saying. After a while I do tend to go quiet and say nothing and I don't want people to think its because I don't want to join in or be friends with them as that is SO not the case.

Hope everyone is well and see ya all soon

12:32 pm - Porno and Tam
My mission in life for 2005 is to get tam not to worry so much about other people and to SHRINK the worrying part of her brain and to chill and mellow and look after her health. ARE YOU ALL WITH ME ON THIS GANG?!?!? Let the gameplan and battle commence!
Well Tam, if you worry then I will worry about you worrying and you will worry about me worrying about you worrying....da da da!

Tam just said something to me which sounded and looked like "Look on google as they have really cute porno pictures on".....
What she actually said was "Look on google as they have really cute polar bear pictures on..."

Hmmm.....

02:55 pm - Champagne, wine, sociology and supervisors
Well last nite was so much fun! We were all slightly tipsy although some of us more than others. As most of you will probably have read Tam's entry I'm not going to repeat everything. (thanks tam ;)) After the lecture at 4.30 with the visiting professor (and organised by Myrtle, my new supervisor), we had wine in the common room in sociology -- where did all those bottles come from? They just seemed to appear from nowhere. 2 hours later (during which myrtle kept plying us with more wine....) we went to the pizza place at renoirs and had yummy food, martina was pretty tipsy and loving us and being really funny! Myrtle kept drinking and drinking! After leaving, (and as you will have read in Tam's entry) we went back to Martina's with a drunken staggering myrtle and her red wine and crisps! Had champagne in Martina's (go M!) which Myrtle didnt' even drink and we laughed so much at her falling asleep on Tam and snoring!

Had another christmas lunch in the Great Hall today at QUB which was lovely. This was for the Equality project myself and Martina are involved on and there were about 8 of us. Needless to say, myself and Martina had water to drink..... Myrtle arrived after her lecture bright as anything and not the slightest hint of a hangover ( I want to know her secret..) and had some wine! The lunch was lovely and the atmosphere in the Great Hall was lovely and christmasy and old with all the candles and portraits of past VC's and the christmas tree.

Feeling slightly full, but playing squash with Tam later . Groooooaan. Least I can work that chocolate pudding off. Tonight I will be doing NOTHING! Hurrah! Such a mad week. Out tmw nite and Thurs and Fri and Sat so a nite in suits me just fine.
